Acceptable Use

With two "kidlets" at home, I am only responding to email
and updating the list about once a month. Thanks for your patience.

This page provides information on how the Southern California Lindy Society Weekly Mailing List functions. Please read and adhere to this information. When you do, you make the list easier to produce, help ensure on time delivery of the list, and make the whole process more enjoyable for me.
  1. If you want to be sure to have your message included, in addition to the other requirements below, get your message to me no later than Tuesday evening of any given week.

    • The list generally goes out sometime between Wed. morning and Thurs. evening every week.
    • I do not check my email every day.

  2. Do not include the whole text of the list in your reply to the list

    • When sending a reply to the list cut and paste only the relevant section of text that will give context to your message.
    • Sending the whole list only serves to slow down the process of making the list. Not doing this makes your reply subject to non-inclusion in the list.

  3. Do not send messages in all capital letters or with a substantial amount of the information in all capital letters.

    • Believe it or not, many people really do read all caps as yelling. It's bad Netiquette to send such messages and I will not propagate them.

I'm not the only one who feels this way. See thissite with info on basic Netiquette

Also, typing in all caps makes it more difficult for people to read. It slows you down because there aren't as many clues to tell you what the letters are. Don't believe me? Read this paragraph again below.

ALSO, TYPING IN ALL CAPS MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO READ. IT SLOWS YOU DOWN BECAUSE THERE AREN'T AS MANY CLUES TO TELL YOU WHAT THE LETTERS ARE. DON'T BELIEVE ME, READ THIS PARAGRAPH AGAIN BELOW.

    • Again, this is something which only serves to slow down the process of making the list.
    • Sending in all caps makes your reply subject to non-inclusion in the list.

  4. Do not send me attachments with information you wish me to post to the list. All information to be included *must* be in the body of the email message you send to me.

    • I will not send out gifs, jpgs or any other graphic.
    • I will not open any documents, etc. sent to me and certainly will not pass them on as part of the list.
    • The volume of information I deal with precludes anything but plain email text.

  5. Unformatted email text will be given priority.

    • Be aware that not everyone's email program can read formatted text... often these folks only get unreadable junk when you try to send them formatted information.
    • In the event that I am pressed for time, formatted text email messages may end up waiting until the next week to go out. It takes time to put them through a text editor to "unformat" them and make them acceptable to go out in the list.
    • Sending your information in unformatted text makes my job easier!

  6. I do not accept anonymous posts to the dance forum

    • You must include a valid email address with your post in order for it to be included
    • This serves to allow others on the list the option of responding directly to you without having to go through the list.
    • It also serves to keep our community civil. Which leads to:

  7. Keep your posts to the forum civil

    • The forum is a place where you can ask questions, and express your compliments, complaints, and ideas about the dance community
    • Do not engage in personal attacks on others
    • Do not use foul language -- there are kids on this list and adults who don't wish to be subjected to this type of language.
    • I reserve the right to refuse to post anything or to slightly edit anything I feel does not follow these rules. I don't do so lightly and I never edit anything to change the meaning of what is being said. I generally indicate an edit either with [....] for a deletion or [added text] for added text.
    • Repeated violations of these rules will result in you being removed from the email list.

  8. Do not misuse personal email information of people who post to the forum

    • This is grounds for removal from the email list.

  9. If you find information/links on these pages that are out of date, incorrect or incomplete, or you know of something else that should be added, PLEASE let me know.

    • Due to the volume of information on my site, I don't have tons of time to check and make sure the information is current.
    • I rely on you guys who are out there going to these places to keep us all up to date.
    • If you know of an event that you want to be sure is on the list -- *send it to me!*
    • The following format is easiest for me to process, "Date, Band Name at Location, followed by other information (address/phone/time/cost, etc.)" The more information you guys send to me, the more complete OUR list will be.

  10. If you want to add your birthday to the weekly list, send it to me

    • This is something that started back when this list consisted of me and about 15 of my friends
    • I also love to include birthdays of swing related figures from the past.

  11. When your want to be removed from the list please follow the instructions on the Sign-Off Page

  12. When you need to change the e-mail address that you use for the list, please follow the instructions on the Change E-mail Page to remove your old address from the list and have your new one added.

  13. Please do not let your e-mail address lapse without signing off the mailing list!!

  14. My Email List is not for sale or for paid advertising use. So don't ask

    • I do not support or promote any paid advertising
    • I do accept donations but this will in no way provide you with special handling of your messages.
    • All events and teachers are treated equally
If you follow these basic rules it will make the list run much more smootly. Thank you. -Margie.
